Reflexology Can Help Heartburn and GERD

Few Americans can say they have never experienced heartburn. Its causes can be quite individual, but fatty foods, large portions, and late-night meals are the most frequent triggers for heartburn. No matter what your particular triggers might be, heartburn can nearly always be caused or exacerbated by stress.

Nearly all of us have some heartburn medication in our bathroom closet for occasional use. Unfortunately, recently findings have determined that many popular heartburn medications, also known as PPIs or proton pump inhibitors, have serious and undesirable side effects including creating a dependence.

Luckily there are some simple lifestyle adjustments that can go a long way to relieving heartburn symptoms.

Being aware of your own personal food triggers and avoiding them, or at the very least, not partaking late in the evening will be a great help. Along those same lines, smaller portions and less fatty foods will keep your tummy happier. In addition, sleeping with your head elevated with an extra pillow or elevating the head of your bed can be very helpful. Finally, my own favorite solution if I haven’t been as careful with my diet as I should’ve been, is hand reflexology.

Now just what does a hand have to do with heartburn, you ask. Plenty, I’ll tell you. There are points all over your hands that correspond to other parts of your body and by gently working these reflex areas, you can help restore comfortable function to these sore areas.

You work an area with a gentle “thumb walk” which looks a lot like an inch worm gently making its way across your palm. Chances are if you are at risk for heartburn at this time, that inch worm movement will cross some sore areas of your palm, likely in a line running from your left index finger down toward your wrist. Work across that area a couple of times, not too hard, and you’ll soon realize it isn’t sore any more. Just to cover all the bases, do the same thumb walking motion on your right hand too.

That’s all there is to it. It’s less than 5 minutes and you can easily tell when you’ve done enough. Hands are easy and convenient when you have a need for quick self-therapy.
