Dr. Norman Rosenthal did the original research at NIH identifying the condition now known as seasonal affective disorder or SAD. He was also the first to report successful treatment using light therapy. I was fortunate to be a participant in his clinical trials in the late 1980s and 1990s. His book, Winter Blues – Everything You Need to Know to Beat Seasonal Affective Disorder, 4th ed. is my bible when planning strategies to keep my life in balance during winter months. It is available from his website, http://www.normanrosenthal.com as well as from Amazon. I cannot recommend it more highly. Even without a full-blown case of SAD misery, this book has a wealth of information for anyone coping with winter changes. Another excellent all-around Web resource is run by the Center for Environment Therapeutics www.cet.org.

The Huffington Post Live recently interviewed Dr. Rosenthal and here’s a link to his video.
